Choir Competes in TMEA

On Oct. 30, 13 choir members auditioned for the pre area choir at East View High School.  Up to this point, these 13 singers have already auditioned at the District and Regional level.
“In district you get your music, and then you go audition for your voice part. The top 40 advance to the regional auditions,” sophomore Jenay Laperyrolerie said. “Then at the region auditions you get three more pieces and audition with them. Then the top 14 advance to the pre-area auditions and perform at the all-region choir concert along with the next five people in each voice part.”
The genres for the auditions are all choral pieces, some are for a mixed choir and others are for men’s choirs or for women’s choirs. They also include music from different time periods, cultures and are even in different languages.
“The music is easy at first, but it gets more difficult as you go through the rounds,” senior Evan Blache said. “Right now they are a lot harder, some are really fun though.”
Also students who audition in the pre- area and area rounds also have to complete a sight reading as well as perform the music cuts.
“To prepare for the sight reading, you have to look at the different intervals, and finding key signatures,” senior Amanda Rodriguez said. “Then at the auditions you get an eight measure piece of music and have 30 seconds to practice then you have to perform the new piece of music and they score you on how you do.”
Of those that tried out, eight students from the choir program advanced to the area auditions where the will compete for a spot in All-State choir.
“It’s a challenging but fun process where you get to compete in different rounds trying to make it all the way to all state,”  Blache said. “It’s a lot of hard work but if you’re picked for the All-State choir, it’s all worth it.”
