Pop Out of Country

Abbey Cliffel, Guest Reporter

Taylor Swift has made a transformation like none other. She started off with her debut self-titled country album “Taylor Swift.” Then she moved on to her next albums “Fearless,” “Speak Now” and “Red.” Each album progressively became less and less country, and moved to the pop side of the spectrum. Now with her new album “1989,” she’s breaking chart records like never before. Swift had earned the biggest sales week ever since 2002 with a grand total of 1.287 million sold in the first week.

Swift’s lyrics are just as amazing as before, and the vocals are incredible. She has catchy songs, and rhythms to groove to. “All You Had To Do Was Stay” is one of the best songs on the album. It’s a catchy, but also a very meaningful song. With lyrics like, “People like you always want back the love they pushed aside, but people like me are gone forever when you say goodbye,” you can easily tell this was one of the songs she spent a lot of time with in the studio. “Clean” is a very beautiful song, and it has an amazing melody as well.

There are two songs that don’t live up to the albums high standard, and they are “Out of the Woods” and “Welcome To New York.”  They are both great songs, but when you compare them to other huge songs on the album, they just don’t compare. Swift’s vocals in each of the songs are beautiful and accurately display her vocal range, but the song lyrics just don’t compare. And while they are radio ready, they are very shallow, and not as meaningful.

Overall, Taylor Swift’s new album is amazing from start to finish, and is one of the bigger album releases of 2014. I’d give this album five stars.  Even if you weren’t a fan of Swift before this album, you should really give it a listen. She has a whole new sound, and it’s one that’s very pleasing to the ear.  “1989” is sold at any local Target for $11.99, and can also be bought on iTunes for $12.99.  This album is definitely worth your money. You’ll be hooked, and will be listening to the album non-stop.
