Kerstin Gier is a German author. She has written 22 books, 6 of which are young adult novels. Ruby Red is her first debut as a YA novel author. It is the first book of The Ruby Red Trilogy. The books have been translated from German to English and 16 other languages. This is a fantasy book with a tinge of romance.

Gwyneth Shepherd’s sophisticated cousin Charlotte has been preparing her whole life for time traveling and everything had to be perfect. Unexpectedly, Gwyneth discovers she is the time traveler in the family. She must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her gift and is thrust upon a mysterious group to aid her in her time traveling. Gwyneth can’t trust anyone and the mission she is assigned to is as confusing to her as her newfound gift. Hidden, old secrets and conspiracies threaten Gwyneth as she moves on.

What I liked most about this book was that the plot idea had an original twist, the girl who didn’t want the time travel gene ended up with it after all. Of course, Gwyneth, as she progress along the story, comes to get the hang of traveling through time, especially with a blooming love interest.

I didn’t really like the style of writing though. I am aware that it was translated, but the story might have been stronger if it had a little bit more of flowery diction, than word for word translation.

This book, however, does receive my good applaud. I rate this as a 3.5 out of 5 stars, particularly for the good story plot idea, but not the dry writing. It was a fast read and very entertaining. The story really does pick up the pace at the end which made me want to read the second installment.
