Exodus: Gods and Kings Review

Louden Sharpe

Director: Ridley Scott

Cast: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley

Release Date: December 12

Rating: 6.3

“Exodus: Gods and Kings” relives the most fascinating story from the Bible. Moses (Christian Bale) rises up to free his people from the tyrannical rule of Ramses II (Joel Edgerton), setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape, and it’s terrifying cycle of the 10 plagues.

The greatest part of the movie was accuracy. Ridley Scott did a superb job in making the story believable and very little liberties were taken compared to the recent biblical epic, “Noah.”

The bad parts of the movie weren’t bad at all, they were just strange. Moses communicates with God who takes the form of a boy. Also, the first plague of the Nile turning to blood gets started by a frenzy of crazy crocodiles. Perhaps to make it seem believable and scientific.

The most stunning moments were the plagues. All the plagues were ugly and gruesome, especially the flies and the boils. Not only did the plagues themselves cause devastation, but problems arose as a result, creating a chain reaction. For example, after the river turned to blood, thousands of fish died, and after the locust plague, riots ensued due to lack of food. The plagues were awesome because they capture the cause and effects of all of the gruesome calamities.

Length of movie: 2 hours and 34 min.

Where Playing: Currently playing at dollar theatres or catch it in a couple more months on DVD.

Rating: Pg-13, the movie has no swearing or gore, but it might be disturbing for children.
Rating: Although the movie didn’t fare well in a world where God is replaced by science and technology, I give the movie an 8.
