Trunk or Treat is a safe way for children of all ages to go Trick or Treating without the dangers that come with the night of Halloween.

Several school clubs and organizations, including R.A.D.D., Stu-Co, the football team, the Star Steppers, P.A.L.S., the cheerleaders and many more will volunteer their trunks to be filled with assorted candy.

“It’s a safer way for kids to get candy,” senior Derin Oduye said.

1. If you have not already, register and take the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.

2. Apply for scholarships.

Fastweb.com is a very helpful website to find scholarships that are specialized to your academic interests. It gives you a brief summary of the scholarship and requirements, along with what it’s worth. A link to the scholarship application is also posted. 

Finaid.org has a lot of helpful resources including a college calculator to calculate tuition costs, loan payments, savings, ect. 

ScholarshipExperts.com is much like Fastweb.com.

3. Attend the Junior/Senior parent night on Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m. so your parents can learn all there is to know about college applications and scholarships.

4. Attend the College Fair at Leander High School on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

5. If you are an athlete, resister for NCAA.

Go to eligibilitycenter.org for the application. This is available to athletes for scholarships for their freshman year.

6. Apply to the universities you are interested in no later than Thanksgiving. Even if the deadline isn’t until February or March, it is best to get your application in early.

“The earliest bird does get the worm” in this case. The earlier the admissions office receives the application, the higher the chance of being accepted.

7. Obtain a FAFSA pin number with you parents.

Go to studentaid.ed.gov/complethefasfa and get your FAFSA pin number for easy log in when you complete your application in January.

8. After Jan. 1, 2012, you and your parents can complete the FAFSA application. However keep in mind that you (if you file for taxes) and your parents need to have your  1040 Tax Form to apply.   

At the start of the new year, apply at FASFA.ed.gov. Remember, you and your parents will need recent tax information.  

 With these eight tips in mind, you should be set to follow your college dreams.

Until March 4, the Knitting club is accepting donated hats, blankets and scarves for the Knit with Love Foundation. 

“The knitted items can be used or new. We are a service organization and in the fall we knit baby blankets and in the spring we help nonprofit organizations,” club sponsor and art teacher Michelle Taylor said.

The foundation was started by Lindsay Baxter in 2008; the knitted items were distributed to the homeless in Los Angeles, CA and because of their gratitude, Baxter expanded the organization to 10 countries as well as homeless, impoverished people all over the world and children with cancer in hospitals.

“The kids [in the club] have come to an understanding that there is more happening in the world than what is just happening on this campus,” Taylor said.

The special education teacher, Amanda Linington came into RST 1 and 2 to talk about special education programs.

“We had five iCap students come to a party on last Wednesday and [the RST students] danced and had fun with the special education students. It was a lot of fun,” RST teacher, Stacy Eberwine said.

NEW CAMPUS HAPPENINGS  

• Attention Seniors – new scholarships are available!  If you participated in programs at Town and Country, the Town and Country Optimist club may have a scholarship for you. If you are attending Texas Tech a new scholarship is available – “Balanced Man Scholarship”, for up to $1,000 dollars.  Come by the Guidance Office and talk with Ms. Buchanan and pick up an application ASAP! 

•  Last Thursday, the Vista Ridge Bands continued their tradition of excellence, with both bands, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, receiving Sweepstakes in both concert and sight-reading at the UIL Contest. Neither of these bands has ever received anything less than Sweepstakes since the opening of the school.   Congratulations to all of the band students, as well as the directors, Mr. Ruschhaupt, Mr. Straight, Mr. Gil, & Mr. Christian, for the successful results from much hard work.

•  Attention choir students: there will be a women’s choir UIL Rehearsal after school today in the choir room from 4-6pm and a Men’s Choir UIL Rehearsal this evening from 6-8pm.  Please plan on attending our final UIL rehearsals!

•  Looking at taking on a leadership role next year?  Both Student Council and RADD are looking for officers for next year.  Please stop by C428 and see Mr. Fox for an application.  Deadline is at the end of the week.

•  Seniors, signup for Project Graduation begin this week.  Members of the Project Grad board will be in the mall area this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the 3 lunch periods to help you sign up for the event.  Our theme this year is “Ranger Beach” and the event will be held at the school on the night of graduation.  Festivities begin at 11PM and end at 5AM.  We  hope to see you all there.

•  CONGRATULATIONS CASEY FOGEL for being recognized at the HOSA STATE CONFERENCE in Houston this past weekend for his AWESOME Chapter Newsletter. Casey earned the privilege to display his Newsletter at the National HOSA Conference in Orlando, Florida this summer. Thanks to ALL in our Chapter who contributed to Casey’s success by submitting articles and photos – Alexis Lynn, Amanda Hollingsworth, Katelin Purl, Delane York, Mindy Tran, Alisha Alvarez, and Zach Shields! Also, Vista Ridge was well-represented by Taylor Columbus in sports medicine, Katelin Purl and Nikki Horgos in Forensic Medicine, Robyn Yates in Epidemiology, and Mindy Tran as our Area One Secretary.

• Sign up during lunches for the Latin Club Dodgeball Tournament, benefitting the Capital Area Food Bank.  The tournament will be held Monday, April 26 from 4-6 pm in the gym.  To enter or to watch, bring 2 canned food goods to room 2619 before or after school or to the lunch registrations on the stage.

• On Thursday the Ranger Tennis Team played in the Westwood Invitational and the Ellison Invitational Tennis Tournaments.  At Ellison, Ryan and Jonathan took first place in Boys Doubles for their first championship on the season.  Lissie also played well advancing to the Consolation finals and winning.  At Westwood, Apollo captured his first Championship finish in Boys Singles with a win over Anderson.  While Spencer and Emily continued to play well with a 3rd place finish in Mixed Doubles.  Chris and Ariana finished the non-district season with a record of 21 wins and just 4 losses.  They advanced to SIX consecutive Finals matches, taking 1st in two of the six.  The team will play in the district tournament tomorrow at Old Settlers Park at 9am.

• The boys golf team finished round 1 of the district golf tourney yesterday in Burnet. The Rangers fired a 308 to take a 17 stroke lead over the rest of the field. Blake Stasiunas currently sits in 2nd place with a 74. Four other Rangers are in the top ten; Brandon Rougeau with a 76; Chad Cobian, Jason Pearce, and Cody Wing all shot 78. The second round will take place on April 9th in Austin.

• The Tug of War is today! 16 teams will be competing. Bring $1 with you today to 2nd period. When SSR begins, give your $1 to your SSR teacher so you can depart to the gym for the event. The gym will fill quickly. Proceeds benefit the Invisible Children in Uganda, and the The Jennifer Wilks Foundation fighting childhood cancer.

  • Each year the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary sponsor Boys and Girls State. If you are a junior who is interested in developing leadership skills and are interested in politics and our governmental process, please come by the counseling office to pick up an application.  Vista Ridge will be able to send one boy and one girl to this exciting program.  Boy’s State will be held in Austin, June 6th through June 12^th. Girls State will be held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, June 13^th through the 19^th. The deadline to apply for Boys or Girls State is February 22nd. Many of the students who have attended in the past discovered they had a “knack” for politics and became more involved in some aspect of government or politics in the future. It is also a great way to make friends and develop leadership skills. Attention all former and current French students!

March is the last month to sign up for the Paris trip in 2011 and take advantage of the $150 discount!  Don’t miss out!  See Ms. Dong for details on how to enroll to go visit the city of love and the beautiful castles in France!

Transfer Students:  If you currently are a transfer student to Vista Ridge (you do not live in the VR attendance zone) please stop by your registrar’s office to pick up a new transfer form for next year.  Return date for forms is April 8.

Wear your Hat to School on March 5^th for only a $1 donation! The Heavenly Hats Foundation collects and distributes brand new hats of all kinds to those heroes of all ages who lose their hair due to the treatment of cancer or the many other medical conditions which may cause hair loss. All donations will go directly to the HHF.  See Mr. Fox for more details.

Graduation is approaching and so is Project Graduation!  Project Grad is an all-night celebration for the senior class sponsored by The Project Grad Committee.  This year’s event will take place on June 5th, 11:30 PM -5:00 AM @ Vista Ridge.  We will have lots of food, entertainment (like a hypnotist!), games and prizes, prizes, prizes.  To make this event a success, we need your help!  We have lots of volunteering opportunities for you, so please look at the Project Grad. website, contact a Project Grad parent that you know, or ask a teacher how to contact Project Grad.  PLEASE bring a 12-pack of water bottles or sodas to Mrs. Powell’s guidance office by Thursday, March 4th.   We know our event on June 5th will be a blast, so keep your eyes open for us around campus!

CALLING ALL JUNIORS! Boys State and Girls State:

Each year the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary sponsor Boys and Girls State. If you are a junior who is interested in developing leadership skills and are interested in politics and our governmental process, please come by the counseling office to pick up an application.  Vista Ridge will be able to send one boy and one girl to this exciting program.  Boy’s State will be held in Austin, June 6th through June 12^th. Girls State will be held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, June 13^th through the 19^th. The deadline to apply for Boys or Girls State is February 22nd. Many of the students who have attended in the past discovered they had a “knack” for politics and became more involved in some aspect of government or politics in the future. It is also a great way to make friends and develop leadership skills. AP Students–If you plan to take an AP exam, please be aware that registration began yesterday.  You can pick up your registration form from Ms. Tippee in the counselors’ office.  Please return your registration form, with payment, to Ms. Tippee by Friday March 5th.  Late registrations will not be accepted.  If you need financial assistance, please see Mrs. Van Ryn in the main office.  Good luck!
