Choir Prepares for UIL this Spring

Choir UIL season is coming up April 9-10, and students will be compete at the Round Rock ISD performing arts center near McNeil High School.

“The way we prepare the students is, we have three pieces of music that we have to learn,” choir director Steve White said. “In addition to those three, we continue to build up on our music literacy skills and to prepare for the sight reading parts of the competition, because its half concert and half sight reading.”

White said the students perform a mini concert in front of an audience, and there are three judges who give them feedback and ratings.
With all this practice, there is no room to slack off. The judges have score sheets that they follow.

“They judge you on things like how you sound and how expressive you were,” White said. “One being the best, superior. A two means excellent which meant that you did a whole lot of really good things, but it was lacking that sparkle. Three means that you were good, yet there was just a couple issues here and there. Four meant that you had some pretty big issues, and five means you did poorly and you should’ve just stayed at home.”

This isn’t the first time choir students have performed in the UIL competition. There are many other schools they compete against, and the rivals are tough.

“In this particular competition, pretty much every high school and middle school choir across the state, does some sort of UIL concert/sightreading under the course of the year,” White said. “Our particular region is going to be all the Leander schools, Round Rock schools, Austin schools, and also in Lake Travis, Georgetown, Marble Falls, and all the schools just northern of Austin.”
