Sprachfest competitors bring home the gold

At 5:30 in the morning on Feb. 2, more than 30 German students from both Vista and Rouse headed down I-35 to UTSA to compete in 36 categories at Sprachfest, the Festival of Languages.

“Competing in Sprachfest was really good for me because I plan to minor in German and major in International Studies,” senior Sara Moya, president of the German Club said. “Plus , it was really fun getting to hang out with the other German Club members. We’re like a close family with an awesome teacher.”

Moya entered the Original Models category with a hand-sewn replica of Frederick the Great’s military coat. All of the judges agreed that the coat was astonishing and very realistic, and perfectly sewn despite Moya’s lack of professional experience. One judge went as far as to say it was “museum quality.”

“I was inspired to do this by my deep adoration for Frederick the Great,” Moya said. “He caught my attention because he was an enlightened thinker, not just a military power.”

As a result, Moya brought home first place in both the regional and the state competition. Her coat will soon be displayed in the showcases for all to see. However, Moya wasn’t the only one to bring home some gold.

“It’s fun to win stuff,” sophomore Hannah Rumbarger said. “Plus, it’ll look good on my transcripts.”

Rumbarger won several awards, including first in Reading Comprehension. Among others that won awards include sophomores Paul and Julian Johnson, junior Jake Pattinson, and freshman Sophia Rumbarger.

“I am so proud of everyone that came and competed,” German teacher William Johnson said. “We did very well, especially for a campus sharing a teacher with [Rouse].”

Anyone who wants to compete next year can see William Johnson in room 2607.
