The varsity wrestling team competed at State Duals in Amarillo on Jan. 15-16 finishing in the top five teams in the state for the second year in a row.
The team captured fifth place winning four out of five duals. They beat Westside 39-27, Hanks 43-16, Martin 47-28 and Klein 47-23, losing only to Allen who took first place.
“This season is going great this year not only for me as an individual but for the team as a whole,” senior Hunter Field said. “We did great at dual state. We got seeded in an area where fifth place was the best we could get. In my opinion, we could have gotten third. We really came together as a team through this tournament.”
Before the state duals, the team took fifth place at the Grapevine Duals on Jan. 8-9, only losing one dual once again, to Allen.
“I think we are doing better at being a team this year, as far as wins and losses go,” Field said. “We are slightly better than last year’s team but we are coming together more as a team this year than last year. We might not have the one guy on the team like Bryan Osorio who is amazing but we have a collection of great wrestlers who will fight as hard as they can and wrestle as a team not just one guy doing it for the whole team.”
The team hopes to send all varsity wrestlers to individual state. The District 26 Championship is Feb. 6, regionals are Feb. 12-13 and the state championship is Feb. 26-27.
“Not only do we have high goals, but we are expected to win districts, place at regionals and send much of our team to state and even the state finals,” Field said. “These are not only my expectations as a wrestler but the team’s expectations as well.”
