Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. Social networking lets you share albums, recommend artists, genres, you name it. You can login to Facebook and connect your accounts. Your first six-month trial is free, with unlimited downloads of music supported by visual and radio-style advertising. It’s similar to Pandora, except all these songs are yours — yours to share, yours to keep and yours to listen to as many times as you want.

The #1 platform for free, legal downloads. All music is free to download, licensed through one of several Creative Commons licenses or the Free Art License, making it legal to copy and share. Jamendo allows downloads in either Ogg Vorbis or Mp3 format, direct download links and downloads through BitTorrent. It allows streaming through, literally, thousands of albums.

Thousands of albums. Completely Free. Completely Legal. It’s a place where new artists can connect with music fans. New music is thrown out into the world, and the artists get recognized. Dogmazic is a multilingual site with free downloads. It’s the primary free music download site in France. But it’s not based only in France. You can browse in English, French, German and Spanish. Dogmazic contains about 2,000 artists, not all French, either.

This is a digital library, offering free universal access to books, movies and music, as well as 150 billion archived web pages. It’s not just limited to music. It provides unrestricted, unlimited online access to its archives, along with permanent storage.

CCMixter is a community remix site sponsored by Artis Tech Media. Users are able to listen to, sample, mash-up or interact with music in so many ways. This includes the download and use of tracks and samples in the user’s own remixes. Create your own style and experience the Mixter for yourself.

FMA was launched by Jersey City radio station WFMU, but personnel from additional radio stations and labels serve as curators for the music in the archive. The site describes itself as “a social music website built around a curated library of free, legal audio.” It currently hosts over 22,000 songs. The Free Music Archive also provides the opportunity to donate directly to compensate participating artists.

Independent music across several genres from both signed and unsigned artists. It features MP3 song downloads, radio streams and many full album streams. At its peak, it had more than 400 independent labels and hosted a diverse collection of artists that were trying to get their name out for awareness.

Free CD listening weekly, MP3 downloads and music news daily, plus exclusive interviews and live podcasts from music’s most influential artists. It’s property of AOL, and it’s all free. Spinner broadcasted over 100 radio stations, including Radio CMJ.
