On June 1 at 8 a.m. the sMiles 4 Sammie 5K will begin right outside the VR Track. Several volunteers, including DECA, have been working to put together this event that is helping to support families with children that have multiple disabilities. sMiles 4 Sammie supports these families so that they are able to get what they need and provide for their children.
“The organization is set up to encourage and help families with children who have medical complex diagnoses,” chemistry teacher and coach Chad Scott said.
Scott’s daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed bilateral club feet and Trisomy 18 in the womb. This miracle baby was with the Scott family for 10 months. The Palliative Care team at Dell Children’s Hospital, which is comprised of doctors, child specialists, and therapists helped the Scott family with appointments, doctor visits and tests. To show their gratification, the Scott family started the sMiles for Sammie organization not only to help families in similar situations, but to also give back to the Palliative Care Team.
“Half of the proceeds will be going to a baseball field that will be used for and accessible to families and their children with disabilities and the other half will be going to the Palliative Care Team,” Scott said.
Come out and run, support, or volunteer at the sMiles 4 Sammy event and future projects.
