Destiny

Destiny is a sci-fi, first person shooter developed by Bungie, the creator of Xbox’s Halo, where you travel around the galaxy fighting aliens. It has been called a mix between Halo and Borderlands. Being the most pre-ordered game in history, Destiny made over $500 million. Destiny was released Sept. 9 for PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

In Destiny you can pick one of three classes – Warlock, Hunter or Titan. Each of these three classes have different skill sets. The Warlock is more magic based, the Hunter is a stealthier class, and the Titan is the tank class. Each class also has special abilities depending on how they apply their skill points. When each class reaches level 15, they have a choice to switch into a subclass, allowing them to change up their skills and abilities.

The Hunter focuses on dealing out massive damage up close and from a distance, but in turn, can’t take very much damage themselves. The Hunter can double jump, granting them increased agility and, depending on how you apply your skill points and which skill tree you choose, different super abilities, giving you different gaming experiences. In the Gunslinger tree, the special skill is Golden Gun which is a flaming pistol that disintegrates enemies. In the Hunter’s subclass, Blade Dancer, you have a different special skill called Arc Blade, where you charge your blade with arc light and consume your foes with lightning.

The Warlocks, who received their powers by studying under the Traveler, a mystical being who watches over man-kind. They get their magic from something called the Void and they use this to deal damage to enemies from a distance. If you prefer to stay away from the action but still deal damage, this is the class for you. Instead of double jump, the Warlocks can glide through the air. In the Void Walker skill tree, the Warlock’s special ability is called Nova Bomb, which is basically a bolt of Void Light that disintegrates enemies caught in the blast. It’s subclass, Sunslinger, has the special ability, Radiance,  where you fill yourself with Solar Light, increasing the effectiveness of all your abilities.

The Titan class is similar to Halo’s Spartans. Titan is more of an up close and personal class, usually used for tanking or dealing out massive damage. If you prefer to lead the charge against enemies and be up in their face, this might be the class for you.  This class, when jumping, has a skill called Lift, which allows them to use as sort of jet pack to glide to their desired destination. For Titan’s special skills, in the Striker tree, they receive a skill called Fist of Havoc. This skill is where the player jumps up and when he lands, releases electric-blue energy to enemies around him. In the Defender tree, the special skill, Ward of Dawn, is where you shape the Void Light into an indestructible shield protecting yourself and your allies from harm.

Each class shares the same four armor slots including the helmet, gauntlets, chest armor, and leg armor. In addition, each player has a fifth slot unique to their class – the Warlock has a bond, the Hunter has a cloak, and the Titan has a badge. Also, some of the armor includes player attributes such as Discipline (decreased grenade cooldown time), Intellect (Reduces cooldown of the player’s super ability), Strength (Reduces the cooldown of the player’s melee ability), and Light (Boost in player’s level increasing the damage done by subclass abilities).

Once a player reaches level five, they unlock The Crucible for all of their other characters. The Crucible is a Player vs. Player game mode where players battle against each other. There are four different game types in the Crucible: Control, Clash, Rumble and Skirmish.

Control is the first unlockable game type of the Crucible. It’s a six versus six match where the two teams compete to control three points: Point A, B and C. The more control points that your team controls and the longer that you control them add up to the total score of your team. To capture a control point you simply stand in the white circle until the meter fills up.

Clash is the second unlockable game type in the Crucible. This game type is very similar to Control, except there are no points to capture. Clash is simply a six versus six deathmatch competing to earn the most points for each kill.

The next game mode is Rumble, which is basically a free-for-all. Six players battle against each other, competing to have the highest number of points at the end of the round. No teamwork, just shooting.

Last but not least is Skirmish. This game type is a lot like Clash except it’s three versus three. No objectives, just teamwork in killing the opposing players and getting more points than the other team. The major difference in this game type is that teammates can be revived on the battlefield by other teammates instead of having to respawn.

So far, this game is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone with a console and the desire to play a great game. The story is interesting and fun to advance. A few of the battles were pretty tough, especially the final boss battles, but overall I have really enjoyed this game and look forward to advancing further in the story even further.
