Spikes for Sammy

The varsity volleyball team played Cedar Park in a fundraising volleyball game on Oct. 7 in an effort to raise money for the sMiles 4 Sammy™ Foundation, Inc. The event raised $2,800.

The sMiles 4 Sammy Foundation, Inc. was founded by president Chad Scott in loving memory of his late daughter, Samantha Scott, who was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 before her birth. Their mission is to provide support for families of medically fragile children and/or children with medically complex special needs.

“It’s a fundraiser kind of like ‘Dig for the Cure,’” junior varsity right side Haley Yu said. “But this time it’s for raising funds and awareness for Trisomy 18, in honor of Chad Scott, and his daughter who succumbed to Trisomy 18.”

And raise awareness they did. The matchup of the two LISD rivals drew a huge crowd, one of the largest turnouts to date.

“We played our rivals, Cedar Park , and it was really intense because we went to five sets,” Yu said. “We had to win by two so the final score ended up being 36 to 34 and normally it goes to 26, but the game was so close and intense.”

But this isn’t the varsity volleyball team’s first major fundraiser. They have done numerous fundraisers and continue to do so.

“We have done things like ‘Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure,’ Foundation for Leukemia, and so much volunteering,” Yu said.
