Have you ever wanted to see Batman’s early years and Commissioner James Gordon starting as a rookie? Then the brand new Fox show Gotham is for you. This show features a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) whose parents were murdered on the way back from the movie theater. Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is there to comfort and tell Bruce that he will find who did this and make sure they will pay.

The show features some of Batman’s most powerful arch enemies such as Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Riddler (Cory Michael Smith). From seeing the first episode alone, I can tell that it is more of a prequel to the main Batman storyline and focuses on what happened in Gotham before Bruce actually became Batman. To summarize the plot of the first episode: on the way home from the movie theater, Bruce Wayne’s parents are murdered by a mugger and Gotham City Police Department arrive at the scene and question the traumatized Bruce Wayne about what occurred that night. Detective Gordon searches the town for suspects and on the way finds Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), a local crime boss who Gordon believes might have been associated with the Waynes’ murders.

Bruce Wayne is around 12 or 13 at this time and is trying to cope with his parents murder by teaching himself to ignore pain and fear. Meanwhile, his butler and now guardian Alfred Pennyworth is trying to raise Bruce like his father wanted him to, respecting his last wishes.

Penguin is also trying to make his mark and wants to be higher in the crime boss ranking because currently he is an assistant for Mooney. Catwoman has been just skulking around and following Gordon on his investigation and doesn’t really get involved in anything. And Poison Ivy is still a very small child, about 8 years old, so not involved much in the storyline as of yet.

The Joker, Scarecrow and Mr. Freeze still have yet to even appear in the show. This show has a lot of potential and could be very interesting, being that it was based on the superhero we all know and love, Batman.

Gotham episodes air on Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox. The show is suspenseful, exciting, full of mystery and a very interesting show overall with the well thought-out character development and plot.
