Art club promotes creative expression after school Tuesdays
December 4, 2015
Art Club students are excited to tackle the 2015-2016 school year, hoping to participate in community service and many different projects throughout the year.
“Anyone can join Art Club,” Julie Winston, Art Teacher and Art Club founder said. “They can show up to any meeting and participate.”
Art Club offers a safe place for students who want to access their creative side after school every Tuesday. Students come together to create projects and participate in activities together.
“I think Art Club is a great environment for everyone and a safe one,” Winston said. “I believe everyone that attends feels like they are a part of something. I think it’s important to give students something to do after school and to be involved, especially for underclassmen.”
Brooke Checketts, Art Club Vice President, agrees Art Club is sort of a sanctuary for students.
“I think Art Club is kind of a safe haven for some, it is for me,” Checketts said. “Even just being around people who are like you in the sense that they’re there for the art. Art Club is highly versatile so there’s so there’s a lot of wiggle room for people who may not feel comfortable participating in other activities.”
As for future activities, Checketts explains the agenda for the year.
“We don’t participate in tons of community service,” Checketts said. “We’re still a small club with pretty limited funding, so right now our focus is recruiting reliable members and getting ourselves together.”
The future looks bright for Art Club participants, as they gear up to complete multiple projects and maybe even have a fundraiser.
“I’m hoping to take about eight more projects this year,” Winston said. “We’ve helped out with Homecoming and projects for our library. Fundraisers are difficult to do. We might have one in the spring; just not sure yet. Hopefully we get involved in more things around our area.”
