Project manager shares inside look into robotics program
December 7, 2015
Who knew taking some advice from a senior on a bus could change junior Maria Teleki’s, high school life? Every day is a new challenge as Teleki is Project Manager for 6990 Static Void, one of the Cyber Rangers Robotics teams.
“I am responsible for all three of our departments: hardware, software and marketing.” Teleki said. “To ensure we meet our deadlines, and have fun while doing it, I correspond with the team leads for each department and our club sponsors, Mr. Bonsall and Mr. Flores.”
Always interested in the sciences, Teleki was a freshman and on her way back from the science state fair, where a senior she had made friends with, gave her the number one tip for her high school life; join robotics. Teleki said it was the best decision she has made.
“On 6990, we all share a passion for what we do, whether it’s hardware, software or marketing.” Teleki said. “I’ve made some amazing friends through the program and wouldn’t trade it for anything. We appreciate each other’s differences and grow because of them, and we all share that passion for what we do.”
There are definitely the pros and cons of taking on such a big role as Teleki did. Yet, taking the role has helped her grow and blossom into the person she is today.
“I’ve made connections I would’ve otherwise never made. I’ve learned so much about engineering and programming and marketing of course, but actually the biggest thing I’ve learned as project manager is how to work with people,” Teleki said. “Seventy percent of what I do is deal with people, and I love it. My job is to help others and make an impact; I get to create opportunity for my team each and every day. And that 30 percent when I get to work with the robot is beautiful. I’ve learned so much and there’s still so much to learn.”
6990 Static Void’s goal is to make it to Worlds. To get there, they have to get through Qualifiers, State and Nationals. Last year, they made it to State, and their sister team made it to Nationals. Junior member of the hardware department, Sahil Mulji, has high hopes for their upcoming chance this year to make it to Worlds.
“This year, the designs are harder and more tedious, but only because we want to out do ourselves from last year,” she said. “Watch out though, we’ve got some real talent and motivation on our team this year. I’m super psyched to see how this will go, I really think we have something special going.”
