NJROTC Lights Up ‘Lights of Love’
December 11, 2015
The cold air sweeps around as runners line up down the street. The call for runners to go sounds behind the uproar of cheers from families and friends. The Ronald McDonald Lights of Love 5k brought about many participants and volunteers to the fund raiser. Among the volunteer groups was the NJROTC cadets.
“I helped move equipment and set them up,” junior Chief Robert Carlson said. “I did this event to help people for the fundraiser.”
Before the event, cadets ran around setting up trees and sponsor tents, that were brought by the groups of cadets loading them into the U-Haul. Many helped decorate while others ran to set up registration stands. Cadets went around building the main setup for the 5k and preparing areas for runners to eat and drink after their run.
“It was hard work,” Carlson said. “I did enjoy helping out to set up, because I know that it is for a good cause.”
During the run, cadets stood by stations to make sure there were no issues or assistance needed. Other cadets stood by to hand out water to runners who finished the three miles. Cadets made many runs to get sufficient amounts of water to those who needed water.
“Giving water to runners is my favorite part,” Chief Tyler Todd said. “I like to help cheer them on when they run through.”
After the runners ran their final lap volunteers stayed to help the take down the fundraiser. Cadets ran around stacking tables and chairs, taking trips to throw away piles of trash. A U-Haul truck came and was loaded three times before all the materials were shipped and unloaded.
“I really like doing this event,”Carlson said. “I have fun every year and look forward to doing it again next year.”
