The school year just started and it’s time for students to get back into the swing of things. Getting up and going to bed earlier than their summer sleep schedule can be hard. A group of students talk about what songs help get them ready for the day and what songs mellow them out before bed at night.

Chris McCann, 11

Q: What’s your favorite music to listen to in the morning?

A: “I’ll listen to something energizing to get me ready for the day.”

Q: What songs?

A: “’Rock the Casbah’ by The Clash or ‘Clap Your Hands’ by A Tribe Called Quest.”

Q: What is your favorite music to listen to before bed?

A: “I tend to listen to something relaxing every night. If I’m feeling crazy, I might goof around and listen to ‘Flyin’ High in the Friendly Sky’ by Marvin Gaye. I like a lot of beach house stuff. All my late night songs kind of blend together.”

Q: What’s your favorite music to listen to in the morning?

A: “I usually like to listen to something energetic to get me pumped up for the rest of the day.”

Q: What songs?

A: “Something like Arcade Fire’s ‘Wake Up’. Maybe ‘Good Morning’ by Kanye West as well.”

Q: What’s your favorite music to listen to before bed?

A: “Something chill to calm me down at the end of the day. The Velvet Underground’s song ‘Pale Blue Eyes’ is a good song.”

Q: What’s your favorite type of music to listen to in the morning?

A: “Something to perk me up before the day. Something to make me feel nice.”

Q: What songs?

A: “Maybe some Stevie Wonder. I’m really digging the song ‘Five Years’ on the album Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie. I might also throw some of The Strokes’ songs in the mix.”

Q: What music do you like to listen to before bed?

A: “I like to take it easy.”

Q: What songs?

A: “Some Bob Dylan or the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John will mellow me out.”

Q: What music and songs do you like to listen to in the morning?

A: “Maybe Joe Cocker’s song “Feelin’ Alright”. It has to be the live Woodstock version though, which is great. And, The Roots. They’re good too.”

Q: What music do you listen to before bed?

A: “Something a little slower. Probably something from Etta James or Ella Fitzgerald.”
