Following the incredible story of the fierce Ruth Bader Ginsburg, “On the Basis of Sex” truly encaptures one woman’s inspirational fight against patriarchy. Actress Felicity Jones portrays Ginsburg’s constant struggle to be a female voice in a male-dominated field with an inspiring performance. Despite facing a dry spell with feature films such as “Pay it Forward,” Mimi Leder proves to be a capable director with her first feature film in years.

Armed with wit, a Harvard and Columbia education, and a supportive husband, Ginsburg sets out to seek justice and overturn years of gender-based discrimination in the law, despite facing blatant sexism along her journey. Ginsburg courageously marches through life undeterred by the persistent difficulty thrown her way and manages to stand passionately before the U.S Court of Appeals to argue the first case of her career, with hopes to topple systematic gender discrimination. Released on Christmas day, the film is currently playing in local theaters, including the Cinemark Cedar Park. The two-hour long, PG-13 movie ranges from emotional to powerful. Without a doubt, the best of the movie is the wisdom and passion that the women have, which transcends race and age. The movie has motivational undertones throughout, contributing to the inspiring nature of it. Another endearing aspect of the film is the undying support and encouragement Ginsburg receives from her loving husband, which keeps her from giving up many times.

On the downside, there are bland moments when law or case procedures are discussed, making the movie preferable to more mature audiences. However, the exciting prospect of a woman destroying legal gender discrimination in a man’s world, more or less, holds the audience’s attention.

Without a doubt, “On the Basis of Sex” is an empowering film that not only shares the story of the amazing Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but reminds women that we are not a force to be messed with. Especially in today’s time, “On The Basis of Sex” is a film worth watching, not only for entertainment but also for a much-needed reminder.
