Lone Star Company Commanding Officer Takes On New Role
April 13, 2021
On Wednesday, March 31 NJROTC Lone Star Company had a Change of Command and junior Meghan Vergis became the new Commanding Officer.
How does it feel that you are the new Commanding Officer?
I’m really excited to be taking the post of Commanding Officer this coming year, but also a bit nervous because it’s a new and kind of big post.
Why did you want to be the Commanding Officer for next year?
I feel like I have a lot of ideas for how to shape the unit in the future, and I wanted to be in a position where I could help those changes be made.
When did you know you were ready to become the Commanding Officer ?
I think maybe midway through the semester I realized that I had pretty good leadership tactics that I thought could transfer into becoming CO. I also felt more confident in a leadership role and more able to take charge.
What were the steps of being the new Commanding Officer?
First, there was a presentation I had to create and a board process, which is pretty much an interview. However, a lot of the reason I was chosen because it came from my actions outside of the official process. Things like my participation and demonstrated leadership skills through the years before I think had a lot of impact.
How did you feel when they they tell you were going to be the next Commanding officer?
I was a bit surprised and very excited to take charge next year.
What are some tips you would give to underclassmen to get to where you are?
I would say to participate and always try to get better. If you have an opportunity to take charge, take it, and learn from as many other people as you can.
