As the holidays roll around the corner, the student body at Vista is eager for the upcoming Blue Santa volleyball game. The tradition started in 2016, and the teachers participated in a basketball game. The students are able to grab cookies and cocoa from the library, sing karaoke, watch a fun thrilling game, and many more.
This year, the tables have turned and the basketball game has turned into a volleyball game. This year has inspired our new principal, Dr. Morgan to switch around the event along with taking the role as our new Blue Santa.
“We wanted to try something new, and Dr. Morgan had a great idea of testing out a volleyball game,” Mrs. Carlson said. “We wanted more staff to participate and not have to huff and puff down the court.”
With the students and staff counting down the days till the big event, students involved in FCCLA are preparing and decorating the library and gym. They work hard after school to put up different decorations. Students of Mrs. Carlson are also working hard during their class period to bake cookies for the students to buy and enjoy.
“After we come back from Thanksgiving break, my classes are working hard to make cookies every period and there’s a lot of clubs and organizations that are providing cookies,” Mrs. Carlson said. “My classes are also helping to make garlands, snowflakes, and lots of posters.”
While one of the Blue Santa teacher ambassadors works on the foods and cookies for the event, another hard-working teacher is working on everything needed for the event that some people might not know about.
“We have been sending out emails to teachers, partnering with different clubs for their students to donate toys and cookies for service hours, we partnered with Chick-fil-A and they’re going to donate 100 cups,” Mrs. Green said. “I’ve also been working with administration to work out the schedule details, also the counselors to help us collect money the day of.”
With so much work done by the students, the cause for the event is to help the Cedar Park community and the police department. Donations can be made by the students which are then given to the families of Cedar Park.
“FCCLA is focused on family and communities so identifying the needs within our community, students or parents in need are one of the core values of FCCLA,” Mrs. Green said. “So by raising money and toys, we are helping our communities which will impact not just those kids who are receiving but also our kids showing them that community service and giving back is an important part of a productive citizen and member of the community.”
Whether you’ve been to a Blue Santa game before, played in one, or you’re a new ranger, make sure to check out the game this Friday, December 6th at 8:30 am. The library will be open to students and staff to buy cookies and hot cocoa for $1 each. Please note that the library will be down during the 3rd period due to lunch.
While FCCLA does host Blue Santa, this organization does lots of different events and things throughout the school year to help out the community. Read more about FCCLA in Matilda Prados’s post on The Word!
