For many high school students, August and September can bring a whole new level of stress as the demanding school year begins. However, student-athletes are introduced to a whole other layer of difficulty.
Juggling athletics, academics, mental health, and social life, requires time management, dedication, and a great support system. Between long practices, late-night games, and a full day of classes, finding a balance between school and sports becomes a difficult task.
“I’d say my biggest sacrifice has been time,” senior Lucas Whitney said. “Coming home, having homework, practice, and a job has been quite difficult to juggle, and doesn’t leave much room for relaxation.”
Whitney, who has been playing soccer for twelve years, understands and witnesses these challenges firsthand. For him and his peers, the struggle to manage both academic responsibilities and athletic commitments is a constant juggling act.
“Try and prioritize your academics,” Whitney said. “There’s nothing worse than having a bunch of work to do. Get that all out of the way, so you can have fun.”
This struggle, however, is not unique to Whitney; many students struggle to balance school life and sports life, as it is a tough act to keep up. Student-athletes must learn to balance the two.
“The most challenging aspect that comes to mind when balancing both school and soccer would be time management,” senior Evelinda Lopez said. “You have to be punctual and on top of things so they work out.”
Finding a good balance between school and sports also involves understanding the importance of maintaining overall well-being and both mental and physical health. Balancing these demands is not easy, however, with the right support, high school athletics can be successful both in the classroom and on the field.
“Another challenging aspect would be maintaining a social and personal life,” Lopez said. “I have to find the right balance between school, soccer, and friends.”
While high school soccer players face many pressures and challenges, their ability to navigate these challenges with strength and determination embodies the importance of time management and self-care. As they continue to excel in their dual roles, they not only enhance their athletic skills but also build a foundation for future success.
“It’s really hard not to get overwhelmed by always being busy but if you have time management it’ll be okay,” senior Katelynn Lyle said. “Don’t try to be perfect, as long as you try your best in everything you do, that’ll always be good enough.”
