“Best New Artist”: Lil Uzi Vert?

Ross Medure and Kurtis Colburn

The 2018 Grammys is fast-approaching and Lil Uzi Vert, a prominent hip-hop/rap artist, is one of five musicians, along with SZA, Julia Michaels, Alessia Cara and Khalid, nominated for “Best New Artist” in this years Grammys.

Though Vert undoubtedly has the most name recognition of any candidate in the “Best New Artist” category- at one point reaching No.1 on the summer album chart with his debut, Luv is Rage 2- some find his inclusion in the list surprising because of his rock-like rapping style that the academy normally finds unappealing. Many critics of Vert call his rapping style, “anarchical” and “confrontational” which strays far from the mainstream style of rap most are used to.

Vert, himself, accepts his unique rock-rap style, even stating in an interview that his biggest musical inspiration has been Marilyn Manson. Despite the bad coverage he’s gotten for this nomination Vert still remains optimistic and confident. Be sure to tune into CBS Sunday to see a recapping of the past years greatest musical hits.
